The three cups
Cup 1: Quick Sums
Quick Sums, Subtraction: steady mental arithmetic against a gentle clock. Sixty seconds; the first problem is 5 − 2.
Tip: Percentages are friendlier as fractions: 25% is a quarter, 75% is three quarters, 20% is a fifth.
Cup 2: Odd One Out
Odd One Out, Medium: searching a grid calmly for the one thing that differs. Twelve rounds on grids from 4 × 4 to 6 × 6; differences: a dot more or less ×4, a turned symbol ×4, a mirrored symbol ×3, a ring with its gap moved ×1.
Tip: Sweep in rows when it does not pop out. Rows are easier to keep track of than a wandering search.
Cup 3: Number Span
Number Span, In order · Medium: carrying a number while it grows. The first number has 4 digits, each shown for 0.65 s.
Tip: Chunk the digits as they arrive: 4-7-2 becomes forty-seven, two. Two chunks are easier to carry than five singles.
