The three cups
Cup 1: Odd One Out
Odd One Out, Hard: searching a grid calmly for the one thing that differs. Twelve rounds on grids from 5 × 5 to 7 × 7; differences: a ring with its gap moved ×5, a dot more or less ×2, a smaller symbol ×2, a mirrored symbol ×2, a turned symbol ×1.
Tip: For turns and mirrors, pick one feature of the symbol, like the foot of an L, and look only for where it points.
Cup 2: Quick Sums
Quick Sums, Division: steady mental arithmetic against a gentle clock. Sixty seconds; the first problem is 16 ÷ 8.
Tip: For subtraction, count up from the smaller number instead of down from the larger one.
Cup 3: Step Back
Step Back, Letter · 3 back: keeping a short list moving through your mind. 23 letters, 6 of them matches; letters used: C, F, H, K, L, N, R, T.
Tip: Say the last items under your breath and drop the oldest each time: ‘K, R’ becomes ‘R, T’.
