The three cups
Cup 1: Ink & Word
Ink & Word, Hard: keeping your eye on the ink while the word pulls the other way. Forty-five seconds with 6 colours and word buttons; the first card is the word ‘red’ in orange ink.
Tip: Let your eyes rest on the edge of the letters, where the ink is, rather than reading the middle of the word.
Cup 2: Odd One Out
Odd One Out, Hard: searching a grid calmly for the one thing that differs. Twelve rounds on grids from 5 × 5 to 7 × 7; differences: a mirrored symbol ×5, a turned symbol ×3, a ring with its gap moved ×2, a dot more or less ×1, a smaller symbol ×1.
Tip: Care pays more than haste: each wrong tap adds two seconds, longer than most rounds last.
Cup 3: Quick Sums
Quick Sums, Percentages: steady mental arithmetic against a gentle clock. Sixty seconds; the first problem is 50% of 68.
Tip: Percentages are friendlier as fractions: 25% is a quarter, 75% is three quarters, 20% is a fifth.
