The three cups
Cup 1: Quick Sums
Quick Sums, Subtraction: steady mental arithmetic against a gentle clock. Sixty seconds; the first problem is 16 − 9.
Tip: For subtraction, count up from the smaller number instead of down from the larger one.
Cup 2: Reaction Time
Reaction Time, Simple: waiting calmly and moving the instant something changes. The first eight waits fall between 1.54 and 3.33 s.
Tip: Look at the panel, not at your finger. The change is easier to catch straight on.
Cup 3: Odd One Out
Odd One Out, Easy: searching a grid calmly for the one thing that differs. Twelve rounds on grids from 3 × 3 to 5 × 5; differences: a dot more or less ×6, a turned symbol ×3, a different shape ×3.
Tip: Care pays more than haste: each wrong tap adds two seconds, longer than most rounds last.
