The three cups
Cup 1: Quick Sums
Quick Sums, Subtraction: steady mental arithmetic against a gentle clock. Sixty seconds; the first problem is 8 − 2.
Tip: Round and adjust: 38 + 47 is 40 + 47 minus two.
Cup 2: Ink & Word
Ink & Word, Easy: keeping your eye on the ink while the word pulls the other way. Forty-five seconds with 4 colours; the first card is the word ‘red’ in green ink.
Tip: A wrong tap costs a full second, so a calm correct tap beats a quick wrong one.
Cup 3: Odd One Out
Odd One Out, Easy: searching a grid calmly for the one thing that differs. Twelve rounds on grids from 3 × 3 to 5 × 5; differences: a different shape ×7, a turned symbol ×4, a dot more or less ×1.
Tip: For turns and mirrors, pick one feature of the symbol, like the foot of an L, and look only for where it points.
