The three cups
Cup 1: Reaction Time
Reaction Time, Simple: waiting calmly and moving the instant something changes. The first eight waits fall between 1.22 and 2.64 s.
Tip: Play several rounds in a row on the same device before you judge a result; single rounds vary.
Cup 2: Odd One Out
Odd One Out, Easy: searching a grid calmly for the one thing that differs. Twelve rounds on grids from 3 × 3 to 5 × 5; differences: a turned symbol ×5, a dot more or less ×4, a different shape ×3.
Tip: For turns and mirrors, pick one feature of the symbol, like the foot of an L, and look only for where it points.
Cup 3: Quick Sums
Quick Sums, Addition: steady mental arithmetic against a gentle clock. Sixty seconds; the first problem is 2 + 5.
Tip: For subtraction, count up from the smaller number instead of down from the larger one.
